Math Jazz — Mathias Bynens’s shizzle, y’all

Note: This site might seem inactive… That’s because it is. Don’t worry though, I’m still coding webpages and stuff! If you’re interested, I suggest you get a translator and head over to Qiwi; or you could just check the latest site we’ve been working on: Apotheek Goethals – Debrabandere. Enjoy!

The World’s Longest Web Page

I was flickin’ through my copy of Guinness World Records 2001 when I read the following:

In March 1999, Ralf Laue (Leipzig, Germany), made a web page with a length of 563.6 kilometres and a file size of only 21,698 kB.

Guinness World Records 2001

Say what? Let’s get a little mathematic on this. 563.6 kilometres equals 563.6 * 1000 * 100 = 56,360,000 centimetres, which is ( 56,360,000 * 72.000 ) / 2.540 = 1,597,606,299 pixels on a resolution of 72.000 pixels per inch (one inch equals 2.540 centimetres). So, to break the record basically all you need is a page with a height of 1,597,606,300 pixels. :)

Unfortunately, I don’t know what Ralf’s record-breaking page looks like (code-wise)… I’d love to know, because after all, this is a pretty weird record — it all depends on your definition of web page. Should a HTML file contain any text in order to be classified as “web page”? Is a HTML file which only consists of some JavaScript a web page?

Leaving out the JavaScript method (document.write() times a zillion!), CSS is the first thing that comes to mind. body { height: 1597606299px; }, beyatch! Pas de chemin — after a little experimenting I found out that the maximum value for the height property is 71582788px. (Add one pixel, and things go wrong.) Moral of the story? We’ll need 1,597,606,299 / 71,582,788 = 22.31830226 elements with such a height to equal the record, so at least 23 to break it.

So here we go: The World’s Longest Web Page (Built With Web Standards), Beating The Previous Record By At Least 48,797,825 Pixels And 21 KiloBytes. Ralf’s pixel/filesize–ratio is 1,597,606,299 / 21,698 = 73,629:1, mine’s ( 23 * 71,582,788 ) / 0.6 = 2,744,006,873:1. The following function roughly calculates all this: y = ( x * 71,585,788 ) / ( 294 / 1024 + 9 * x / 1024 ), in which x is of course the number of elements with a height of 71,582,788 pixels, and y the number of pixels per kilobyte of file size — the ratio. For example, a file with 100 big-ass paragraphs would have a total height of 7,158,578,800 pixels (2525.39 kilometres!), a file size of 1.17 kB, and thus have approximately 6,139,350,663 pixels per kB.

(Seriously, did I just break a world record?!)

    You’re funny.

You should write the Guinness World Records and ask to be put in their book :D.

What’s stupid is that they are quoting both the length of the page, and the file size in the record, so you could effectively say that you’ve broken the record if you either lengthen the page, or cut the filesize. In fact, why not make a 1,597,606,299 pixel page that lists all the different possibilities to break the record? It could probably be accomplished with some code to output the page and examples into a directory — you might get a little short on storage space though ;).

An interesting follow-up to this would be “testing the limits of CSS” — testing limits of various things (height, font size, etc.) in different browsers (rather than just Firefox). That would be cool.

    You know you’re right, Jon:

Thank you for registering your record attempt with Guinness World Records.

One of our representatives will contact you within the next 4–6 weeks with a decision on your record request.

If your suggested record is approved, we will get back to you with rules and regulations so that you may attempt your proposed record. If you have already attempted a record, and we are interested in your submission, we may ask for the documentation needed to verify the record.

Should your record proposal/attempt be unsuccessful, we will send you a detailed reason outlining our decision and we will often suggest a similar, existing record.

Our online tracking service enables you to track the progress of your record claim through the Guinness World Records website. You will need your membership number and password to access this service — these will be sent to you once your claim has been assigned to a researcher.

Thank you for contacting Guinness World Records. Good luck!

    I guess we’ll have to wait…

Yeah, Colin — you said it correctly: if I get in the book.

Each year we receive approximately 65,000 enquiries from around the world from people who want to set or break records. Many are successful and their details are added to our database of records.

However, we can only publish around 4,000 records in the book each year, as it would be impossible to publish entries on all records and record-holders. An editorial decision therefore has to be made as to which records will be included.

If your record hasn’t been selected for publication on this occasion, there’s a chance that it may be included in future editions, dependent upon the requirements of the book-buying public and the managing editor’s discretion. It may also appear in this website.

Oh well, we’ll see. Receiving a Offical Guinness World Records Certificate is good enough for me :)

Hey Mathias, have you seen this page?

That would of course increase the page’s file size, which is something I tried to avoid as much as possible.

I estimate that one can press PgDn? for about three days on that page until the end is reached.

    Dear Mr Bynens

Thank you for sending us the details of your recent record attempt for “Longest Web Page”. We are afraid to say that we are unable to accept this as a Guinness World Record.

This record is currently rested, which means that no one can attempt this record and become a new record holder and therefore is not a category that we wish to pursue.

We appreciate that this may be disappointing to you. We are always keen to hear from people who wish to set a Guinness World Record. If you should need any advice regarding record breaking in the future, please do not hesitate to contact us, quoting the above membership number.

Once again thank you for your interest in Guinness World Records.

    Yours sincerely,

    Amanda Sprague

Honestly, I don’t understand. Ralf Laue’s page once got accepted, so why doesn’t mine? Oh well… Official or not, I think I can say I created the World’s Longest Web Page. :)

Yeah, whatever. Please allow me to quote myself: For example, a file with 100 big-ass paragraphs would have a total height of 7,158,578,800 pixels (2525.39 kilometres!), a file size of 1.17 kB, and thus have approximately 6,139,350,663 pixels per kB Beat that, beyatchiz!

Bwa ha! 865bytes + 4bytes for the filename.

Would be a lot smaller if not for that damn fancy formatting regex that makes commas in numbers so a human can read it…

While making this I ran into Firefox not wanting to graphically render any of the P’s I was adding to the page… so run it in IE, which has no issue making a webpage that scrolls for bazillions of pixels.

    Fun stuff!

Good job, Jeff! That is the ultimate JS-solution. Forget about longestwebpage.com already.

Yeah, and I suppose you could remove some styles as well, such as background:#ddd;border:1px solid #000;, which of course are mainly presentational, or even margin:0;padding:0 (who cares about a little extra browser-set default whitespace — we’re talking about long web pages, aren’t we)? But that’s probably too hard-core. I dig the look of the page as it is now.

While making this I ran into Firefox not wanting to graphically render any of the P’s I was adding to the page…

Eh… I just viewed your page through Firefox 1.0.4, and everything seems to work just fine.

So far, 0 paragraphs totaling 0 pixels which is 0 km.

There always is at least one paragraph (<p>Start</p>), so this message should never be displayed. How about So far, 1 paragraph totaling 25,000 pixels which is 0.008819444453440278 km? This would of course add to the file size…
