Math Jazz — Mathias Bynens’s shizzle, y’all

Note: This site might seem inactive… That’s because it is. Don’t worry though, I’m still coding webpages and stuff! If you’re interested, I suggest you get a translator and head over to Qiwi; or you could just check the latest site we’ve been working on: Apotheek Goethals – Debrabandere. Enjoy!

On AdSense

On December 17th, Math Jazz turned one. (Thank you, thank you.) It was on the same day I got my hosting bill for 2005. My parents both got pissed off because I pay such an amount of money for just some site you aren’t getting anything in return for. Hmm… Of course paying isn’t fun, but I really have a lot of fun running this site, definitely making it worth the hosting costs.

Later that day, I was browsing around, and ran accross Jeremy’s Lost Interest? post. Reading through the comments, I noticed there was a small discussion going on about wether the Google ads JezzJournal had been offering for ages should be removed or not. In response to that comment, Jeremy explained why, back then, he decided to place these ads on his site:

I added the Google Ads as a service to visitors of the site, so there can be an unobtrusive way of offered other services. I can also make an extra buck or two per month. […] It doesn’t “pop up”, so I don’t find it too big of a problem.

Jeremy Shields

Ian justified Jeremy on this:

I bearly [sic] notice Google ads.

Ian Main

Then I realized — neither do I. My eyes must be trained to separate site content from ads or something, ’cause I hardly look at them. I’m guessing most people don’t really pay attention to discrete ads.

So, as you may have noticed, from now on this site features Google ads on the top of every page. Why not? My visitors get to see links to related sites; after embedding the JavaScript I don’t have to worry about the whole thing — it’s all automagic; and it gets me some bucks, which might cause my parents to stop or at least cut down on the nagging.

You heard it — if you want to help me get some money without having to donate yourself, please, do not click those ads!

Argh, turn the friggin’ thing off! I’ll never get an iBook by that kind of attitude.

    Happy Birthday dear Math Jazz
    Happy Birthday to you.

By the way, I “accidentally” clicked on one of those barely noticeable ads. Sorry. I won’t do that again. Not until tomorrow, that is. ;)

I have to agree with Mathias actually. Ads are how sites make money, and personally I’d prefer view ads than pay a subscription to access site content. That said, I don’t notice or pay attention to Adsense ads.

Thanks for the comments guys, I really appreciate that. However, please try to keep that clicking down to a minimum — I’m making way too much money!

With regards to ads, it’s odd. Sometimes, I’ll really notice them, and be annoyed at how obtrusive they are. Other times, my eyes just skip over them. I think I prefer the way you do your ads though — at the top of the page — rather than some people who put them in the middle of the page. Not only does it get in the way of the content, but it also interferes with my scrolling (then again, the IBM scroll button never was top notch).

Also, you need a “Donate” link! After you so helpfully gave me that bit of code, I was filled with Christmas spirit and thought about donating $5 (yes, I realise it’s Euros. My laptop really is that old), but couldn’t find a link.

I guess I’ll just have to not click on the ads like you asked.

Sorry Mathias, I shall refrain from clicking the ads then ;)

Nah, Jonathan’s got me convinced. I shall click now and then.

Thanks Rob, and thanks Jonathan for convincing Rob.

And David: w00t! I added a donate button to my about page, specially for you. Thanks :)

Joachim: See? I never noticed those ads on your site before.

Nicely done! According to my receipt, I just purchased a single copy of Math Jazz! When does it arrive? How do I install “Math Jazz”? Does it come with a users manual? What’s the warranty? Can I upgrade to later versions for free?

    Hehe.

Good luck getting the iBook, and many thanks for the code snippet!

How are you being paid by AdSense? Last time I checked, Google were only paying through American bank accounts…

What’s the difference between the iBook and the Powerbook (besides the obvious stuff)?

Matthew: Since payment checks are only sent out to those who have earned $100 or more, I’m not worrying about that just yet. :) Ask me again in a year or two.

Owen: The most important difference to me is the cost! I really want a 14/15 inch notebook, so the difference is at least $500. That’s a lot of clicks on ‘em ads!

I love Google Ads. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be able to run Poker Chip Tricks, or at least I wouldn’t be able to keep it free for visitors. I had to get my own dedicated server to handle the bandwidth that the site uses for the videos and that’s not cheap. Over $100 a month and the Google Ads generate more than enough to pay for that each month. If you have a site with specific content, it really does help the visitors to have ads to relevant sites where they can either get more information or purchase something related to your content as in my case.

    Long live Google Ads!!!

Hey, Mathias, do you find that your Google ads 9 out of 10 are just ads for blogging services? Make me batty.

So people understand, 4 months on I think I’ve earned 33$. Which, if I keep this up ought to cover next year’s domain registration and a couple months hosting. W00t!

I’m very sorry, I just clicked on one of the unobtrusive ads on top of your site.

You should change the iBook-o-meter to MacBook-o-meter now ;-)
